A mastectomy is a surgical procedure that removes the entire breast while leaving chest muscles intact. Chest wall contour and arm strength are unaffected by this procedure, and recovery time is relatively short.
There are two variations of this procedure. A simple mastectomy leaves the axillary lymph nodes intact, and radical mastectomy removes deep chest muscles. A partial mastectomy will remove more breast tissue than a lumpectomy. A quadrantectomy removes 25% of the breast. Based on the size of you cancer and how far it has spread, Dr. Ahmad will determine which procedure is the best option for you. If you choose to have breast reconstruction in addition to your mastectomy, you may be able to undergo both procedures at once.
